Win Away For The Sheers

The Sheers got back with a win after a midweek defeat at Redhill winning 2-3 at Badshot Lea to record a league double over last season’s Isthmian league team.

The Sheers could & should have been two nil up in the first 6 minutes with Elliot York missing the target at the far post after a pass from Aidan Larkin and from Harvey Valter feeding Aidan Larkin in the Baggies box who then failed to slip the ball to Elliot York at the far post for a tap in. It was the Baggies that then opened the scoring on 7 minutes after a long Baggies throw that was not cleared by the Sheers, that the Baggies kept the ball to find Louie Pask on the edge of the Sheers box who found the bottom corner of the Sheers net. The Baggies almost doubled their lead with Louie Pask & Felix Hills combining with the latter firing towards the far side of the Sheers goal that brought out a good save from the Sheers keeper Michele Vega. Sheers Harvey Valter intercepts a mistake to get a shot goal wards that a Baggies defender blocks on the line that then falls to Elliot York who fluffs his chance to equalise. Baggies Stanley Jones fires a shot that zooms just over the sheers bar on 21minutes. The Sheers equalise on 24 minutes with Harvey Valter finding room in the Baggies box to shoot home from George Sellick’s assist. The Sheers take the lead two minutes later after a shot by Aidan Larkin’s is blocked by the Baggies keeper Harry White that falls into the path of Harvey Valter who fires into the roof of the net for 1-2. The Baggies had a chance to equalise after winning a corner that the Baggies defender Freddie Thompson heads over the Sheers bar on 38 minutes. The Sheers could have extended their lead before the break with George Sellick’s shot that the Baggies keeper blocks and the rebound is then hit wide by Aidan Larkin. Most of the build up play from the Baggies came from Captain Fareed Hakeem-Habeeb and the Sheers no 9 Harvey Valter was dominant in the first half. HT 1-2

The Sheers extended their lead on 54 minutes from a long ball by Callum Mackie to Aidan Larkin who flicks the ball onto Elliot York who takes a stride before unleashing his shot into the far side of the Baggies net. On 56 minutes from a second Baggies corner Alfie Edmonds header strikes the top of the Sheers bar. A minute later Sheers Tom Gardner & keeper Michele Verga collided on the edge of the Sheers area but were fortunate to have further cover back in the area to clear as the Baggies promising attack was halted. Midway through the second half after 2 cautions for the Baggies and one for the Sheers the Sheers made their first substitutions with Kareem Foster & Dan Boyden coming on for Elliot York & George Sellick. On 68 minutes both George Mackie & Razza Ajibola made last minute tackles to prevent the Baggies scoring chances, a minute later the Baggies were denied a penalty that the Sheers Joel Jennison-Leppa was adjudged to have handled the ball whilst on the floor and then the Sheers man was again in the limelight with a good block from a Baggies on target shot. The Baggies finally made a their break through from a free kick that gets blocked and then the Baggies pick up the second ball on the edge of the Sheers area by Ben Jordan who fires a shot that the Sheers keeper Michele Verga gets a hand to the shot but cannot stop the ball going into the Sheers net. Further substitions on 80 minutes for the Sheers with Sam Whitehead and Ethan Leeks coming on for Aidan Larkin & Harvey Valter. Sheers have a big shout for a penalty with Dan Boyden being tackled by the Baggies defender on 84 minutes. With the Baggies heads up for an equaliser and pushing more numbers forward the Sheers had to defend tirelessly and were pleased when Kareem Foster got back as a last man defender to clear a cert chance for the Baggies. In added on time the Sheers keeper Michele Verga comes for a high ball that squirms from his hands that is snapped up by the Baggies forward to have the chance only for a last ditch block from Josh Jennison-Leppa to prevent the scoring chance. Sheers then go on a counter as the ball is whipped long into the Baggies half to Ethan Leeks who takes the ball forward for him to have only the keeper to beat with a shot that the Baggies keeper gets down to save. Seconds later the referee Nigel Owen ends the match and the Sheers go home with the 3 points.

Michele Verga, Callum Mackie, Joel Jennison-Leppa, Tom Gardner, Archie Lowery, George Mackie, Harvey Valer (Ethan Leeks 82), Aidan Larkin (Sam Whitehead 80), Elliot York (Dan Boyden 67), Rahman Ajibola, George Sellick (Kareem Foster 67)
