Another Win On The Books

Sheerwater made the short trip over to Camberley Town looking to keep their decent run of form going. A couple of changes were made from last weeks’ impressive performance against Tadley Calleva. Elliott York and Theo White started and Matt Bryant was rested and Kareem Foster was on the bench. Also on the bench were McDonald, Boxall, Valter and Portbury.
It was a cold and wet afternoon on a pitch with not a lot of grass on and the famous slope. Sheerwater were kicking uphill in the first half and took a good ten minutes to settle in to the game. Camberley dominated the possession and it was all hands to the pump keeping them at bay. Burton had a free header on target but Fabio Suarez adjusted well to palm the ball out as it bounced up. Mekhail McLaughlin was well placed to clear a cross in to the danger area and Callum Mackie made a timely intervention as a two v one situation developed. It was Sheerwater who almost took the lead on fourteen minutes. Camberley stopper, Dom West came rushing out but didn’t get the ball and Theo White lobbed him and two defenders but the ball bounced and went just over. Liam Avery was trying to push Sheerwater further up the pitch and they had a spell of pressure. Seb Rowland did well to win the ball and he cut inside to pick out White who delivered a cross to the far post for York and his header in to the six-yard box was cleared by Passfield. Both keepers made fine saves just before the break. Suarez acrobatically tipped over a pile-driver from Passfield and West tipped York’s thirty-yard free-kick over. It was Camberley who would have been more disappointed going off at half-time with the score at 0-0.
With the slope in their favour in the second half Sheerwater were more in control and kept the ball efficiently and switched play with purpose. White came more in to the contest with some driving runs down the left and in and around the Camberley penalty area. A couple of efforts were off target and West made a decent save. Camberley were pegged back but they defended their box well and headed clear on many occasions. Jake Horn was getting through plenty of work and relieved the pressure on Sheerwater’s back four. York and George Mackie were linking up well and Mackie set York up but his effort found the side-netting. Changes were made and Valter joined Rowland up front. A great through ball from White saw Valter take a great first touch but an interception from Passfield was crucial. There were no real clear cut chances at either end but Sheerwater looked the more likely. Foster was busy down the right cutting back on to his left foot to deliver some crosses but again Camberley stood firm and West came out commandingly to snatch a cross out of the air. Ben Portbury was introduced and he was a threat breaking forward from midfield.
With ten minutes remaining a robust challenge by Denny Roberts on White was punished by the Referee with the showing of a red card. Following the incident with players getting involved the Referee sent Liam Avery to the sin-bin.
As it appeared to be heading for a 0-0 score-line up popped George Mackie with a decent low strike from eighteen yards in a crowded area. West got down to it but it slipped from his grasp and went through his legs in to the net. This was in the ninety-third minute. Sheerwater almost made the cardinal sin of letting Camberley back into the game when a slip allowed Pickup to go through on his own. A great effort looked to be going in but luckily for the visitors it hit the post and went across goal and away.
Another pleasing result where Sheerwater found a way to win the game whilst keeping another clean sheet.
